In 2015, I attended a lecture by Marta Chudolinska, a talented and articulate Toronto artist and OCADU graduate, whose website describes herself as “fascinated by the mystical, narrative potential of images.” She stated how important TCAF, the Toronto Comic Arts Festival, was to her artistic career and how unique it is as an event for zinemakers to showcase their talents. Later I attended the festival and heard another Edmonton graphic artist explain that she had to go to public libraries to find examples of comic art; commercial vendors deemed graphic novels too hot to handle.
